Peer   To   Peer: Advisors - Mrs. Caputo / Mrs. Bernstein
Peer to Peer is a nationally recognized club, which was begun in the year 2000 by the Princeton Center for Leadership training.  Since its inception, the club has morphed to take on many of the challenges that both students and schools face on a daily basis.  Topics addressed and covered, (but not limited to) are: bullying, cyber –safety, healthy peer relationships, anti-drug, anti-alcohol, and anti –smoking.   Working with a police officer and a parent representative ensures that our outreaches address matters that affect the community, as well as individual students who need our services the most.
Students are chosen to be members of the Peer to Peer group through a thorough application process.  In this way, almost every group is represented in our program.  Any student is free to apply; we have room for up to 25 students. Students then meet once a month to outline and prepare for outreaches and presentations, and each session is either used for training purposes or brainstorming ideas as to what they, or the advisors see as a need.  There is a formal training book that is used for this purpose, and each member is given copies of activities, when appropriate.
One of the most important jobs that our Peer to Peer members do is to bring the 5thgraders up at the end of the school year, and assign them their own peer leaders.  In that way, the upcoming students have a reliable peer “buddy”, to ease their transition to the Middle School.   Another function of the club is to provide outreaches to the younger grades.  Our members are trained to discuss various topics, and then are placed in classrooms to do activities that are both meaningful, as well as academically sound.  This philosophy is based on the idea that students tend to listen better to peers when discussing emotional topics.  The Great American Smoke-Out, as well as Kick-Butts Day, have traditionally been hugely successful out-reaches for our club. Since bringing this invaluable club to Hasbrouck Heights, members have been involved in hiring performances by such well known motivational speakers as the Improbable Players, as well as big screen productions of Choices or Chances.
*Meetings are the last Wednesday of each month.

The second module discusses bullying and violence. The HHMS Anti-Bullying Club: Advisor - Mrs. Miller

This club was started with the intention of allowing the students a safe place to begin to learn techniques on how to deal with bullying situations. It is meant to empower students who are often bullied while opening the eyes of the students who are the bullies in order that they might begin to understand the negative effect that they are having on others. The first meeting was held in December. It was a great success. Over 80 middle school students attended to watch a PowerPoint and discuss situations that might be defined as bullying. During this time, the students seemed excited and empowered. They were anxious to share their experiences and recommendations for helping the environment of the middle school. Throughout the remainder of the year, the students will be asked to sign up for one meeting per month. The meetings will be held after school in room 402 from 2:45-3:45. There will be sign- up sheets on the wall by room 402. This will allow for students to attend in a smaller capacity so that we can really begin to work on some problem solving.
